Book Reviews
Sorted Alphabetically by Title

Above and Below Ground, Marilyn Massey (also known as Marilyn Mackay-Smith), Woodluck Publications,
Millwood, 1985.
Massey includes JRT stories, puppy selection, and working terriers as well as some history of the breed.  Guests contributing to the book include Mary Roslin-Williams, Paul Ross, and John and Barbara Lowery.   Probably the best part of this book is the detailed description of conformation points using diagrams and explaining how faults affect movement and function.  A very good place to start understanding the finer points of conformation.

The Art of Raising a Puppy, The Monks of New Skete, 1991.
From the whelping box to the adulthood, this book explains what the puppy needs at each stage of life to become your best friend and companion.  The book explains in plain language, how to socialize and when.  If you’ve ever wondered exactly what “proper socialization” for your pup really means, this is the book to buy. The book contains the puppy temperament test.  You will find no better reference book  on behavior, for terriers or any other canine.  It’s worth every penny, and more.

The Complete Jack Russell Terrier, D. Brian Plummer, Howell Book House Inc, 230 Park Ave, NY NY
10169, 1980.
Plummer was among the first to write a book on Jack Russell Terriers as the popularity of the little workers began to rise.  Plummer was chosen as chairman of the committee tasked with forming the JRTC of Great Britain in 1975.  He has written a number of books on terriers, lurchers and such.  He also developed his own particular strain of terriers which was distinctive enough that the terriers were eventually denied registry with the JRTCGB.  The Complete Jack Russell Terrier talks in some detail about the formation of the original registry.  He also addresses various breeds of working terriers used about the British Isles.  Though he has worked to other quarry, Plummer particularly enjoys ratting with his terriers.  Plummer has been, and continues
to be rather harshly criticized by  working terriermen.  Read the book and judge for yourself.

Earth Dogs Ins & Outs, Joanne Frier-Murza, 1999.
This newly published book is getting good reviews.  It gives us a lot of history on earth-working dogs from Sweden, Germany, etc. telling what and how they hunted   Also included are directions for den construction from about the globe.   Another popular aspect of the book is the training guidance for earth-dog tests and den trials.  Readers can learn what to do and NOT to do to get the best performance from their competitors. Frier-Murza has a lot of experience with various breeds of earth-workers, and provides information on various clubs that were formed by enthusiasts.

How to be Your Dogs Best Friend: A Training Manual for Dog Owners, The Monks of New Skete, 1978.
“What’s that?” you say.  The Monks of New Skete support themselves by breeding, raising and training dogs at the monastery in upper New York state.  They raise German Shepherds.  Their extensive experience in raising healthy, well-mannered, well-socialized dogs is unparalleled.  Their reputation has become such that dogs with problem behaviors are frequently referred to them for re-training.  The shepherds from their kennels do everything from companion to schutzhund. The principles outlined in learning to be your dog’s best friend apply to any breed.  This is an insightful  book written in simple language.

How to Speak Dog: Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communication, Stanley Coren, The Free Press,  A Division of Simon & Schuster, Inc., 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10020, 2000.
If you’ve ever felt like your dog was trying to tell you something, but just couldn’t figure out what, this is the book for you.  While Coren approaches “doggish” (dog language) from a scientific point of view, his love of canines shines through.  The book is written in plain language so the reader doesn’t bog down in scientific terminology.    While dogs may not form words, or use many sounds to communicate, Coren’s research and sketches help us to understand the methods that dogs use to communicate in their modern “pack” which includes humans.  This book is definitely a keeper.

Hunt & Working Terriers,  Captain Jocelyn M Lucas MC, Tideline Books, Sporting Book Specialists, Rhyl
Clwyd, 1931.
Lucas was an avid sportsman who developed his own strain of terrier based largely on the original working Sealyham.  This book contains photos of many working terriers as they appeared before they were recognized by any kennel. Club.  Lucas went to the trouble of contacting many foxhound packs of that time and describes the type or breed of terriers they preferred, and types of earths in their region.  He offers some historical information on earth-working dogs and their uses in various parts of the world, as well as tools used in pursuit of varmints in days of yore. Hunt & Working Terriers is a very revealing look at the history of earth-working canines, and one that you may re-read many times.

Jack Russell and His Terriers.  Dan Russell, JA Allen &  Co Ltd, 1 Lower Grosvenor Place, Buckingham
Palace Rd, London SW1 W 0EL, UK 1979.
A brief biography of the Reverend Russell by “Dan Russell”, known in real life as Gerald Jones.  According to Eddie Chapman, (THE REAL JACK RUSSELL, pg 9), Jones…”(was) the last authenticated person to have personally known, and worked terriers with that other fanatic of the breed, Mr. Arthur Heineman.”.  Dan Russell is gone now, but his words and recollections live on in this book about “the Parson.”

The Real Jack Russell Terrier, Eddie Chapman, 1993.
Chapman’s second book on the Jack Russell Terrier goes into more depth on breeding philosophies, mating, whelping and rearing puppies.  The book is overflowing with photos of terriers from England and the USA, but he still found room for more hunting stories.

Russell Terriers in North America; A Hunter’s Story, Kenneth James, Hunter House Press, RR 6 Box 218,
Bedford PA 15522, 1995.
James tells us how an over-population of rats in his dairy barn led him to develop his own unique strain of “den-drivers”.  The book contains pedigrees, photo’s, a fox hunting diary, and average measurements of the earth-dwellers his terriers have accounted for.  Groundhog and gray fox are among the varmints in his hunting ground.  The book contains many hunting stories.  Not all of the stories have happy endings.  This is not a book for the faint-of-heart, but a very good description of the type of terrier needed to work earth-dwelling varmints in southern Pennsylvania.

There Are No Bad Dogs,  Donald W Denoff DVM,  Globe Communications Corp,
5401 NW Broken Sound Blvd, Boca Raton FL 33487, 1993.
This is a tiny little pocket booklet that can be found at the check-out counter in some grocery stores.  It is a great source of understanding dog behavior, and using that understanding to train you dog.  The following quote is from the introduction: There ARE badly trained dogs.  There ARE misunderstood dogs.  There ARE unsuitable dogs.  But there are no BAD dogs.  This one is definitely worth far more than the purchase price, even if you only read the four-page chapter, “Making YOU the top dog”.

The Working Jack Russell Terrier, Eddie Chapman, 1985.
In this, his first book, Chapman speaks briefly on many aspects of the JRT.  Probably the best part of the book is the telling of the hunting stories.  He shares memories of many encounters in the hunt field in his no-nonsense style. Chapman was a founding member of the JRTCGB.  He has spent a lifetime working and breeding Jack Russell Terriers.  He brings his expertise to the show ring, as he is well respected internationally as a conformation judge.
